What is The Apple TV?

The Apple TV is a streaming media player, which means it takes content from the Internet and displays it on your TV. An Apple TV is a streaming media that plugs into your TV and allows you to stream apps (such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and Disney Plus) so that you can watch your favorite shows and movies. It effectively turns any dumb TV into a smart TV. If you already have a smart TV, it allows you to run Apple’s tvOS as opposed to your TV’s smart interface.

Apple TV vs your smart TV: What’s the difference?

The Apple TV 4K (2021) is very similar to the older version. In fact, they look identical and have most of the same capabilities, including access to Apple Arcade and Fitness+, and support for immersive video and audio technologies, such as 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The difference is that Apple TV 4K (2021) has a faster processor (A12 Bionic), as well as support for HDMI 2.1 and Wi-Fi 6. This also allows the Apple TV 4K (2021) to support 4K TVs with higher frame rates: 4K at up to 60fps. Basically, if you’ve bought a new 4K TV within the last year or two, the Apple TV 4K (2021) will likely be able to get the most out of it.

Maybe the most obvious difference is that the Apple TV 4K (2021) comes with a redesigned Siri Remote. It scrapes the old touchpad in favor of a more traditional D-pad controller, and it has dedicated buttons for power and Siri. Also, it’s a little thicker, more ergonomic and not as symmetrical (so it should be easier to navigate in the dark). If you have an older Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, you can purchase the new Siri Remote for $59. If you buy any new Apple TV (4K or HD) from Apple, you’ll get the new Siri Remote (not the old one).

Getting started with the Apple TV

NOTE: The process for setting up the Apple TV is basically the same as it is for any streaming media player:

1. Connect the Apple TV to your TV and plug it in. Switch the input on your TV for the port you’re using.

2. Connect the Apple TV to the Internet.

3. Connect to the content providers you want to watch/use.

Why Do You Need It?

You can get Apple shows on other smart TVs. Apple Fitness+ is streamable from your iPhone to an AirPlay-enabled set, as are Apple Arcade games. If you’re not a 100% Apple household, Apple TV 4K doesn’t bring much to the entertainment landscape in your home that you don’t already have. Plus there are oddities in performance. When connecting my iPhone to my Apple TV via AirPlay, we were rewarded with a slight audio lag annoying when you’re trying to follow a workout video and have to face away from the screen.

Even in my “all-Apple” home, the Apple TV 4K is the one device that rarely gets attention unless there’s a software update. That said, in the fall, Apple TV will gain some new tricks with the release of tvOS 15. The interface will gain a Shared With You list, just like on your iOS 15 iPhone. It will also have a new For All of You recommendation engine that surfaces shows everyone will enjoy watching together based on who’s actually there. If you’re listening to shows using your AirPods (or Pro or Max), you’ll get Spatial Audio and beyond just watching TV, you’ll be able to monitor all your HomeKit enabled cameras on a single screen.

If you’re deep into the Apple universe and don’t already have a smart TV, the Apple TV 4K can make sense. If you do have a smart TV and you don’t like the interface, you might feel more at home here, and so should consider adding one to your entertainment center regardless. You can do neat things like pop on your AirPods so that you can watch shows in private without disturbing others. If you workout with Apple Fitness+, your Apple Watch will sync on screen automatically. When tvOS 15 comes out later this year, you’ll be able to sync a pair of HomePod Minis for stereo sound.

You can make the Apple TV 4K the center of your entertainment universe but it honestly doesn’t make sense for everyone. If you game with Apple Arcade, workout with Apple Fitness+ and control your smart home with the Home app, then the Apple TV 4K is for you. For everyone else who already owns smart TVs or competing set-top boxes, there just isn’t a very compelling reason to plug it in.

Overall, we wouldn’t recommend buying the new Apple TV 4K if you already own the outgoing model, at least not yet. The upgrades to picture and sound performance are marginal, the new remote, lovely though it is, doesn’t transform the experience, and the faster processor only really makes its presence felt in slightly snappier navigation.

But the outgoing Apple TV 4K was already the best video streamer you could buy and the new version is the same but a bit better. That extra power could be leveraged more in the future, too, perhaps with more advanced games and video performance. In the shorter term, the High Frame Rate 4K HDR feature will likely be used by more apps, theoretically making for smoother, better-looking video streams, particularly for sport. In short, if you’re looking to buy the best video streamer currently available, the new Apple TV 4K is it.

If you want an Apple TV right now, you should go with the Apple TV 4K which starts at $179. But keep in mind that this model was launched almost three years ago, and a new generation of Apple TV might be announced at any time. For most people, waiting for the next model may be the best option. This new Apple TV should bring significant advances in performance, which aren’t only crucial for games, but also to keep it updated with the latest apps and features for longer. And even if you’re not planning on buying the newest model, the current Apple TV 4K is likely to become cheaper with the announcement of a new generation. The only model not recommended is the Apple TV HD. As mentioned before, it can handle streaming apps, but we don’t know for how long Apple will keep it updated since it runs with the A8 chip. Personally, in my experience, this Apple TV is getting slow for some tasks, so be aware of that.
